A Love Letter to Women in Weed
On October 25, 1988, the Women’s Business Ownership Act granted women in the US the right to own businesses for the first time.
Let’s be real—that’s ridiculous. Some of us have pipes older than that.
And yet, there are so many hardworking, visionary women in the business of cannabis.
As a woman who owns a cannabis business, I can’t help but feel wonder and gratitude when I think of all the other women I get to work with. How hard we have to work to be taken seriously. How much care, empathy, and heart we bring to the industry—even on the tough days.
Because for us, it’s not just about good weed (although that’s definitely a perk!!). It’s also about pain relief, feeling empowered in our bodies, and the deep, vulnerable conversations that happen over a shared bowl.
All of this, and more, is why I love working and partnering with women-owned and women-led brands and dispensaries. So I want to say:
To the women-owned dispensaries,
Thank you for making and holding physical space for other women in the industry. For creating warm, collaborative environments for patients, enthusiasts, and the canna-curious alike.
And thank you for taking a chance on Sugar House—especially Compassionate Care by Design and Choice Provisioning Center, my first two customers!
To the women product designers,
Thank you for pushing forward with your product because you believe in it, regardless of how many times you’ve been told that your dreams don’t have a place in the industry. For your vision, your intuition, and your contribution to the market we’re building together.
To the women growers,
Thank you for putting your years of expertise, knowledge, and craft to work for us. For tending with care the flowers that bring us all together. For finding ways to be sustainable, kind, and reciprocal to the Earth.
To the women in testing, transportation, and logistics,
Thank you for using your brilliant minds to keep our products safe, transparent, and available. For working long hours, early mornings and late nights, in service of our health and happiness. For transcending the bullshit that comes along with being a woman in science and engineering.
And to the women consumers,
Thank you for smashing stereotypes and stigma with us. For shamelessly prioritizing your peace and pleasure. For sharing your love of the plant with us and with others. And thank you for buying weed from women.
